Education secretary visits Hawaii schools

The nation's top education official is vowing to look into concerns about assessments for students attending Hawaiian-language immersion schools and how Native Hawaiian-focused charter schools are funded.

Up through the roots Nature showcased on charter school hikes

The teachers and family at Kona Pacific Public Charter School would have it no other way. The publicly funded school of about 220 students blends a Waldorf curriculum with agricultural practices and Hawaiian culture. Saturday, groups of students led parents, teachers and the public on hikes through a densely forested section of the 40-acre campus. The interactive hikes were part of the school’s Earth Day celebration and included a farm-to-table picnic fundraiser.

State Auditor applauds Public Charter School Commission

Hawaii’s new State Public Charter School Commission is getting high marks from the State Auditor.

According to a report released Thursday, the commission promises to establish real oversight and accountability throughout the charter schools system. The report highlights the commission’s Performance Framework, which actively monitors and assesses schools’ financial, academic and organization performance.
