Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science PCS
HAASPCS started as a small charter school in 2001 in the rural area of Pahoa, Hawaii Island. It has since grown from a 7-12 grade school with an opening enrollment of 107 students to a K-12 school with enrollment of about five hundred. It has developed its campus on about 11 acres of agricultural land. The mission of HAASPCS is to provide every student an education where learning needs are met by implementing flexible and effective teaching strategies which target the full range of learning styles.
We offers a rich selection of electives including visual and performing arts, music, dance, yoga, surfing, agriculture, bee keeping, aikido, Hawaiian language, construction, aquaculture, agriculture, as well as AP classes.
HAASPCS students need two credits in community service for graduation. Twice a year, for a week, students go out into the community and do service projects which include beach and Pahoa town clean-ups, entertaining senior citizens at centers, volunteering at animal shelters, tutoring at elementary schools, and other projects too numberous to mention. HAASPCS was awarded a three year Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation in 2008. HAASPCS just completed it's three year review and expects to get another three year accreditation good through 2014.
