Kua O Ka La PCS
Kua O Ka La Public Charter School is a Hawaiian culturally driven school that sits on a 600 acre ancient Hawaiian coastal village site in the District of Puna, Hawai`i Island. We began with 26 students in grade 6-8 and now have 145 students K-3 and 6-12. We seek to teach traditional and modern technologies in an effort to prepare our youth with the 21st. Century skills necessary to succeed in today’s world. Our next goal is to build our approved certified community kitchen. We have recently completed another 7000 sq. foot classroom building outfitted with Smart Boards and a fabulous tech lab.
Kua O Ka L? PCS supports successful college transitions while students earn both high school and college credit. We are partners with Kea`au Youth Business Center and University of Hawai`i – Hawai`i Community College in an innovative program called ‘middle college’ whose trend is sweeping the nation. Kua O Ka La PCS and is providing 22 juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn three college credits and one high school credit each semester over a two year period enabling them to graduate with 12 college credits all paid for! This program brings all students together one day a week in Kea`au for the college classes.
Hui Malama `Aina is our 9th and 10th grade science and social studies program. Students travel every month for two days to learn the process of table mapping. Hui Lokahi program for grades 6, 7 & 8 is supported by a Federal grant from the Administration from Native Americans. Our ANA Project Goal is to develop integrated agricultural and culinary programs, including the necessary infrastructure, utilizing a culturally responsive approach that supports a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for our Native Hawaiian students.
